Starting in September 2001, the
French Ministry of Education and Ministry of Culture and Communication decided
to implement a joint plan for promotion of the arts and culture in schools. The key component of this wide-ranging plan is the creation of an artistic and cultural project class, serving as an instrument for the development of artistic awareness among young people. Design is an integral part of this plan and contributes to the growth of artistic senstivity in the classroom. Design is a tool for understanding the environment and for developing critical capacity, helping children to see how consumer products are produced, sold and advertised. By discerning the difference between beauty and utility, young children can learn to become responsible consumers. Older students will learn to see design as key to modern living, to the behaviour, aconomy and ecology of our society. To help teachers with this approach, the National Teaching Resources Center (CNDP) has developed two new teaching tools to accompagny artistic teaching at school or in the home. The entire set of Stories Of Objects DVDs can be shown in the classroom and discussed by students and their teachers. It is available from all CNDP sales outlets. Short Stories Of Objects, comprises four remarkable 13 minutes documentaries to develop awareness among young children and to open their eyes to contemporary design. An exceptional opportunity to discover top contempory designers and to learn more about them through their creations. And the accomplanying biographies, technical information sheets and activity suggestions provide a starting point for more in-depth research. |
